Technical Student Intern for RF Division

Department Description
The RF Division, located in Tempe Arizona, is part of the Network and Computing
Systems Group of Freescale Semiconductor. RFD develops high power discrete and I
C solutions for the Cellular Infrastructure(GSM, W-CDMA, WiMax), CATV, Industria
l-Scientific-Medical, and Microwave/Avionics markets. Key product offerings are
used in: cellular and WiMax basestations, analog/digital broadcast television sy
stems, cable TV systems, industrial RF systems, as well as other applications.

Scope of Responsibilities/Expectations
Main responsibilities include the design and development of Discrete High Power
RF Transistors for the wireless infrastructure markets. Design work involves low
impedance transistor matching networks including integrated passives, wire bond
s, MOSCAPs, packaging interfaces and PCB board level matching. The design proces
s uses a combination of measurement based techniques (e.g. loadpull data, etc) a
nd CAD software with the use of linear and non-linear models. The design process
will make use of Agilent’s ADS, 3D and planar electromagnetic simulation tools
. The position will require for the individual to work closely with device engin
eers, product engineers, modeling engineers and manufacturing personnel for succ
essful and timely product introduction. It will focus on ISM and broadcasting ma
rket application support for global market.

Specific Knowledge/Skills
Candidate will hold a minimum of a BS degree, MS preferred in electrical enginee
ring, physics or related technical field and have a minimum of 1 to 2 years dire
ct experience in designing high-power RF transistor internal-matching networks u
sing LDMOS or GaAs HFET technologies, corresponding to devices with more than 60
W output power at 2 GHz and above. The engineer must have a strong background on
Microwave and RF engineering with an emphasis on several of the following areas
:
• Hands-on experience with board level tuning and optimization of matching
networks.
• Microwave measurement techniques (S-parameters, loadpull setups, VNA cal
ibration techniques, spectrum analyzers, power meters, etc).
• Understanding and development of advanced RF/microwave measurement techn
iques
• Working knowledge with Agilents Advanced Design System (ADS) , Ansofts
High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and planar electromagnetic solvers (S
onnets Em and/or Agilents Momentum)
• Solid understanding concerning circuit instability and strategies to res
olve them.
• ISM & Broadcasting products experience will be the plus.
• Strong communication skills
